Gort - or Ivy - is fourth in this artist's series and represents the eleventh consonant of the Ogham alphabet, the letter 'G'. It is also representative of the eleventh month in the Celtic Tree Calendar. Ivy's symbolism is a bit difficult to explain as there are conflicting explanations. Growing in a helix pattern, the twining vine is often symbolic of a search for one's self throughout the twists and turns of life's path. It is also connected with death, as it has the ability to encroach upon and completely cover that which was once living, yet conversely it is itself evergreen. Ivy's entwining habit also mirrors the movements of the heavenly stars and planets. In Britain, the Ivy Girl, as the Moon Goddess, and the Holly Boy, as the Sun god, were important figures in the mid-winter Yule celebrations. The ancient Christmas carol "The Holly and the Ivy" comes directly from this association, and with the advent of Christianity, the meaning incorporates the act of Christ's suffering, thus insuring Eternal Life to those who believe.
